VOCP now provides BoxConf, an easy graphical box configuration interface which will allow you to create and manage the VOCP system tree.

The VOCP boxconf GUI is there to help you manage your VOCP configuration but, in keeping with Unix tradition, the configuration file is plain text and, although it uses XML, easy enough to create and edit manually. See the box-config-file.txt help file (included with VOCP) for details on the format used for configuration.

When you've created a configuration that suits your needs, it is time to test test test. You could run down to the corner public phone and spend a few quarters, or eat up minutes on your cell phone but a better way is to use your keyboard and speakers to talk to VOCP. Vocplocal allows you to do this.

Using VOCPLocal

Turn on your speakers and open a terminal window. As root, launch vocplocal

# /usr/local/vocp/bin/vocplocal.pl

You will see a bunch of debug output and hear the root box greeting. The final lines will look something like

/usr/local/vocp/bin/vocplocal.pl [23874]: Getting user selection
Enter DTMF Selection ([0-9]+<ENTER>):

Use the keyboard to enter your simulated caller's input, then hit the ENTER key. You can perform most actions like an actual caller, move around in the system, log on to hear your messages, etc. Navigating the system in this manner is similar, but not identical to, doing so over the phone.

While boxes will expect you to use *NNN# to enter multi-digit input over the phone, you need only enter the actual digits (NNN) through vocplocal. So, over the phone, you would log in by entering *999# but while using vocplocal you should simply type 999 and press the ENTER key.

Vocplocal does not currently support recording messages. All other functionality is intact but, to date, the VOCP::Device::Local does not support recording sound. At this time, there doesn't seem to be a point in implementing this but if anyone wants to do it and gets it working reliably, we shall include the patch.
